If you've ever looked at a Denver Metro Area commercial roof and thought to yourself "Wow, that looks like the world's worst jigsaw puzzle," you were probably looking at a Built-up Roofing (BUR) membrane. Commercial BUR membranes are created by layering alternating layers of asphalt or tar and reinforcing fabrics like felt or fiberglass, then covering the whole thing with a top layer of gravel or mineral granules. The result is a roof that's (hopefully) waterproof, fire resistant, and durable enough to withstand the elements. But it's also a roof that's somewhat of an eyesore.
